Lessons from Sweden: Health Care & Leadership - An Emerging Leader’s Perspective

Jennifer Duff, CHE
The Canadian College of Health Leaders, ARAMARK Healthcare and Emerging Health Leaders are pleased to jointly release Jennifer Duff’s report: The Development of an Emerging Leader: Lessons from Sweden: Health Care & Leadership.

Jennifer Duff, CHE was the recipient of the 2011 Emerging Health Leader Scholarship and was invited to participate on the Sweden Study Tour, which was held from May 1st to 6th, 2011. The study tour brought together a small group of Canadian health care leaders to explore the current developments in Sweden’s health services policy, and the organization of their health care system. The intent of the study tour is to provide a forum for the exchange of information, ideas, and experiences that will foster relationships between Canadians and their Swedish counterparts.

Time to Educate, and Maybe Certify, Health Governors / Le temps est venu de former, et possiblement, de certifier les administrateurs dans le domaine de la santé

(Le texte français suit.)

Tom Philpott, MBA, MHA, CHE

Governance is tough. And many argue that health governance is toughest of all.

We expect much of our health governors. Board members are responsible—and ultimately accountable—for the financial oversight of their organization. But their responsibilities do not end there, by any means. Add in oversight of:
  • patient safety and quality of care,
  • risk management,
  • information technology and privacy decisions,
  • CEO and board performance,
  • talent management,
  • medical leadership,
  • community relations,
  • relations with other health organizations, such as regional health authorities,
  • organizational strategy
  • plus the responsibility of hiring, evaluating and, when necessary, terminating the CEO
You can see that the list quickly becomes exhausting.

Our History - CCHSE Health Product Review Service (HPRSTM) Underway / Notre historie – Le Service d’examen des produits de santé (SEPSMD) du CCDSS maintenant en fonction

(Le texte français suit.)

The College’s newest service for corporate members, the Health Product Review Service HPRS™, is now in operation. The purpose of the new program is to help refine products and services offered to the health services sector.

Drawing on the 30-year experience of the Hospital Research and Development Institute (HRDI) of Pensacola, Florida, the College has created HPRS™ as a “think tank” of active health service executives who offer time and insight to HPRS™ clients. The clients are drawn from the College’s corporate membership of companies, providing goods and services to the health service industry.
